Fascinating, it certainly is, because through the ages and in the light of its powerful properties, red reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) proves to be a precious nutraceutical to fight many diseases, but also in prevention and to improve one’s quality of life.
There are in excess of 2,000 varieties of reishi, with red reishi being a rare find in the wild. Ling Zhi, as it’s called in Chinese, is now cultivated according to methods that guarantee its therapeutic quality. The virtues of the “mushroom of mushrooms” reside in the synergy of its multiple active ingredients such as polysaccharides, sulfur compounds, nucleic and amino acids, triterpenes, alkaloids, steroids, and unsaturated fatty acids. The best way to extract these active molecules is a slow and long decoction of the fruiting body’s lamellae (gills). This traditional method is the recognized method to dissolve chitin, the resilient membrane that encloses the active ingredients of the fungus and which can be irritating and potentially allergenic, even when crushed.

Directions of Use
Adults: Add 3 g of reishi (approximately a 12 cm strip) to ½ litre of water. Simmer for 10 to 20 minutes to make a tonic, or several hours to make a concentrate. Temperature range should be between 50 and 70 ºC; never a rolling boil. Serve hot or let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate the unused portion for up to 14 days. To avoid digestive upset, take with food or a meal.
